Moves Bosox Should Not Make

We are here in June, the Townies are in first place, and the trade mongers around the major leagues-teams who are not doing as expected- must be dangling prospects and slumping, high-priced veterans in the Boston Red Sox faces.
Here are some do’s and don’t’s for Sox General Manager Ben Cherington as June goes into swoon and the deadline looms.
Don’t trade or option Jose Iglesias. Make him a utility player if you must, platoon him with Stephen Drew if you can. Don’t let this future star get away. Not even straight up for Jonathon Papelbon.
Do trade Drew if the only other option is to get rid of Iglesias. Some contender might need a shortstop. Give them Drew for someone like Cocoa Crisp of the Oakland A’s if Daniel Nava slumps or gets hurt or if Jonny Gomes loses his skill of “raking” lefties.
Don’t let Jarrod Saltalamacchia leave as a free agent. Re-sign him to an extension or give him a new deal now. Next year he and Ryan Lavarnway will make a perfect platoon. This year David Ross is a solid back -up.
Just keep wheeling out the starting rotation as it is. Don’t make a dumb trade (Iglesias, Jackie Bradley, jr.) for a starter. Plug in Alfredo Aceves, Franklin Morales, Allen Webster, et al to fill the gap if someone goes on the DL.
And certainly do not trade one of the above sterling prospects for a middle reliever. Remember Jeff Bagwell…

About bruceditata

A retired school teacher, former sportswriter who is a fifty year devotee of the Red Sox fan experience. Not a nouveaux riche bosox fan-owing my allegiance to playoff success in the twenty-first century and two championships; a real hard-bitten leatherneck who remembers Tracy Stallard giving up Roger Maris's sixty-first and Carl Yastrzemski lugging the whole region on his back to the 1967 Impossible Dream pennant. Seeking the rarefied air of the blogosphere to satiate my lust for Sox talk.
